Measuring Guide

Measuring a Room

sketch of a roomMost rectangular rooms are easy to measure. Common mistakes are when nooks or crannies are missed, so we advise that the first things you do is draw a sketch of the room detailing all walls. Mark in the position of any doors. Measure the length and width of the room taking into consideration door recesses or bay windows. If the room has alcoves measure the width and depth of them, this may be important if joins are required. Also consider that most carpets come in different widths, 3.66 metre 4mtr or 5mtr wide when measuring. As a rule of thumb if you measure every wall in a room you will have enough measurements.

Measuring a Hall

sketch of a hallAgain common mistakes when measuring halls is not to allow into recess or doorways. Draw a sketch of the hall detailing all walls and doors. Measure the sizes as the arrows suggest in the diagram to the left.

Measuring a Landing

sketch of a landingLike above, sketch out the landing, you should draw the landing shape standing at the top step, always mark were the landing meets the stairs X. Measure the width and the length remembering to allow into door recesses. A landing piece of carpet always includes the top step of the stairs, so it is important to measure over and including the top step in one piece like the top drawing.

Measuring Stairs

Steps

diagram of stairsWhen measuring a flight of stairs you do not need to measure the length of stairs, all we need are as follows.

Middle landings

Like a main landing, a mid landing and the top step are one piece so you must measure from the landing down over the top step and also the width of the step.

Winders

diagram of windersThere are generally 3 different types of winder. We would need the measurements as suggested by the arrows on the diagram below.

Bull Nose Step

diagram of bull noseBull nose is the last step in a staircase see below on how to measure.

This stair isn't on every stair case sometime you will just have straight stairs with out a bull nose again just draw this to avoid any mistakes.

When measuring the (L) over step measurements use the same guidelines as a straight stair the only difference when measuring a bull nose the (W) width you rap your tape measure around the curves of the stair as in the diagram to get the measurement (W).

Please note that carpets come in different widths. Hall, stairs and landings, normally need to be planned out to find out the most economical size for you while trying to keep joins to a minimum. The width and design of the carpet also needs to be considered. We would always recommend that a professional does this.
